    Violin Making in Scotland 1750-1950
Violin Making in Scotland explores the craft's rich heritage and defining characteristics throughout its flourishing in the 18th and 19th centuries, presenting the lives and instruments of the principal makers alongside a number of little-known makers and obscure artisans. Fully indexed and illustrated throughout with superb colour photography, the book centres on more than 80 rare and well-preserved examples by Scotland’s finest makers, with detailed biographies, comprehensive analysis of the craftsmanship and influences, instrument dimensions, label details and brands. The 400-entry dictionary attempts to include all the known Scottish makers, accompanied by examples of their work.   Where possible the instruments are grouped by region, allowing for easy comparison with the output of the other local makers and highlighting the working relationships between them.  Scotland has probably produced more makers per capita than any other country, but it is only recently that many significant craftsmen have been identified and researched.
